Upcoming Events

The Upcoming Events calendar is a great way to stay up to date with developer events and share your own events with the community. Here’s how to get the most out of the Upcoming Events feature.

Finding and Interacting with Events

To view all upcoming events for the current month, go to the Upcoming Events page. You can click each event to explore the event details.

On the top right of the calendar, you can see a ‘Today’ button and a left and right arrow button. These allow you to navigate to other months or go back to the current month.

By default, the calendar shows you events for all tags. If you are interested in specific event topics, you can use the drop-down under ‘all tags’ to filter for those topics. For example, if you are interested in edge computing, you could select the edge_computing tag from the menu and only events with that tag will be shown to you.

If you prefer to not use the calendar, you can view all events, filtered or unfiltered, in a standard thread format under the calendar.

Once you click on an event, you will go to the event details page. This is where you can learn more about the event and when and where it takes place. You can also find links for more information and to register. You can also show interest in an event by selecting from the three RSVP options: “Going”, “Interested”, and “Not Going” (in case you change your mind). Feel free to leave a reply with feedback on the event in the comment section.

If others have already shown their attendance status, you can see the count for each option under the event.

Please note that events will disappear from the calendar, once they are over. The calendar does not show previous events. However, you can still find previous events in the regular topic view.

Creating Events

Events are created slightly differently than regular forum topics.

Here’s how to create an Event:

  1. Navigate to Upcoming Events.
  2. Click the ‘+ New Topic’ button at the top right.
  3. Click the gear icon in the new post’s toolbar.
  4. Select ‘Create event’ from the dropdown menu.

  1. You should see a popup with options for selecting the event’s start and end date and time. Here, you can enter the event name, add a URL, choose the privacy level of the event, add reminders, and choose whether the event is recurring, etc.

  2. When you are done, click the ‘Create’ button at the bottom of the popup window.

  3. You will now see code in the post body that represents the event component and a preview of the component in the field on the right.

  4. Use the post buddy field to add more information about the event and topics discussed. If the event speaker has a forum account, you can embed their profile card in your post by copying and pasting their profile URL into your post in a separate line. For example, you can use “Speaker: https://discuss.akamai.com/u/securitylevelup” to highlight the user securitylevelup as a speaker.

  5. Click Create Topic to add your post to the approval queue. You will be notified when your post has been published.

  6. You can edit an event that you have already published by clicking on the More button (the one with the three little dots) on the event component. This allows you to adjust the start and end time, location, event URL, etc.

That’s it! Now you can share your own events with the community and get more people interested in attending
